Do you need an OBD2 scanner, or is your phone enough?

There are three kinds of tools for finding out what is wrong with a car before you go to a shop. They answer different questions. Here is what each one needs, what it can and can't do, and what it costs, including ours.

Three ways to find out what is wrong

Car Whisperer is our app, so read its column with that in mind. The other two columns describe kinds of tools, not one product: details vary from app to app.

Your situation

Which one fits your problem?

The check engine light is on and you want the exact code
A scanner, or skip buying one: most large US auto parts stores read codes for free. Keep in mind that a code tells you which system reported a fault, not always which part failed.
A new noise: squeal, grind, knock, hum, click
Record it while it happens. Most noises never set a code, so a scanner often shows nothing. A phone recording plus a sentence about when it happens (braking, turning, cold start) is usually the fastest way to a likely cause.
A warning light you don't recognize
A photo of the dashboard is enough to learn what the light means and how urgent it is.
Something you can see: a leak, smoke, a loose part, odd tire wear
Film it or photograph it. Add where it is and when you noticed it.
A repair quote that feels too high
Photograph the quote. Car Whisperer sets each part against the market price. It compares parts only, not labor, taxes or materials.
The light is flashing, the brakes feel wrong, you smell fuel or see steam
Pull over where it is safe and get help. No app should talk you out of that.

They work together. If a scanner or a parts store gave you a code, add it to your description in Car Whisperer, next to what you hear and see.

Honest limits

What Car Whisperer can't do

Better you know before you download.

  • It doesn't plug into your car.No OBD2 port, no live engine data, no clearing of warning lights.
  • It doesn't replace a mechanic. It tells you what is likely, what to check and what to ask.
  • Some parts are regional.Recall check for the US only; confirmed part offers for the US, Canada and Australia, a price range elsewhere.
  • iPhone only, for now.Android is planned. Join the waitlist.

FAQ

Questions

Can a phone app diagnose a car without an OBD2 scanner?

Yes, for anything you can hear, see or describe: noises, vibrations, leaks, smoke, smells, a warning light on the dashboard. No, for reading stored trouble codes or live engine data. That needs a scan tool in the OBD2 port.

Is an OBD2 scanner worth buying?

If you want to read codes often, watch live data or clear a light after your own repair, yes. Bluetooth adapters cost roughly $20 to $130. If you only need a code once in a while, most large US auto parts stores read it for free.

Can any app clear the check engine light without a scanner?

No. Clearing a stored code needs a scan tool connected to the OBD2 port. Once the fault is fixed, many cars also turn the light off on their own after a few drive cycles.

Does a trouble code tell me which part is broken?

Not always. A code tells you which system reported a fault, not which part failed. Use it together with what you hear, see and feel before you buy parts.

Is Car Whisperer on Android?

Not yet. It is on iPhone only. Join the Android waitlist and we will let you know.
